ಊರು ಉಪಕಾರ ಅರೀದು, ಹೆಣ ಶೃಂಗಾರ ಅರೀದು.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತು ಇದು. ಊರ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವವರು, `ತಾವು ಊರಿಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಸೇವೆ, ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ತಮ್ಮಿಂದ ಉಪಕಾರ ಪಡೆದ ಜನ ಎಂದಾದರೂ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನೆನೆಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಒಳ ಆಸೆಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಆದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಸಲ ಜನ ಆ ಘಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ತುಂಬ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ತೋರುವವರಂತೆ ಕಂಡರೂ, ಕೆಲವು ಕಾಲವಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಮರೆತೇಬಿಟ್ಟಂತೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಹೇಗೆ ಹೆಣವು ತನಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಶೃಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಸಂಭ್ರಮಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಊರು ಸಹ ತನಗೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಆದಂತಹ ಉಪಕಾರವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಫಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತಿನ ಅರ್ಥ.

Kannada proverb : Uuru upakaara areedu, hena shrungara areedu (Town does not understand one’s service, dead body does not understand beautification).

This is a Kannada proverb used when one laments about the town forgetting the services rendered by him. It is observed that the town seldom remembers its heroes. Accept for one or two prominent persons, others who served the town or village are forgotten in due course of time, the help they rendered is reduced to nothing. This is comparable to beautifying a dead body, where the dead body does not comprehend the pains taken to beautify it. Therefore, it is futile to lament about dead body not appreciating its beautification and town forgetting the help it received.
