ಕುಂಬಾರಂಗೆ ವರುಷ, ದೊಣ್ಣೆಗೆ ನಿಮಿಷ.

ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಗಾದೆಮಾತಿದು. ಒಂದು ಮಡಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಕುಂಬಾರ ಅನೇಕ ದಿನಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಡಬೇಕು. ಸರಿಯಾದ ಮಣ್ಣು ಹುಡುಕಿ ತಂದು, ನೀರು ಹಾಕಿ, ಕಲಸಿ, ತುಳಿತುಳಿದು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹದ ಮಾಡಿ, ಆ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ತಿಗರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಡಕೆಯ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದು, ನಂತರ ಅದನ್ನು ಒಣಗಿಸಿ, ಸುಟ್ಟು, ಗಿರಾಕಿಗಳು ಬರುವ ತನಕ ಅದು ಒಡೆಯದಂತೆ ಕಾಪಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು …!! ರಾಮರಾಮಾ …..!!. ಮಡಕೆ ಮಾಡುವುದೆಂದರೆ ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಕೆಲಸ! ಆದರೆ ದೊಣ್ಣೆಯೆಂಬೋ ದೊಣ್ಣೆಗೆ ಕುಂಬಾರನು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಮಡಕೆಯನ್ನು ಒಡೆಯಲು ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಸಾಕು! ದೊಣ್ಣೆಯಿಂದ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಏಟು ಬಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಾಕು, ಮಡಕೆ ಪಟ್ ಎಂದು ಒಡೆದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ! ಹೀಗೇ ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಕೀರ್ತಿ, ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಹೆಸರು, ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು, ಮಾನವೀಯ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳು, ಸ್ವತಃ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಥವಾ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಅಜಾಗರೂಕ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಒಂದೇ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಶವಾಗಬಹುದು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಮನುಷ್ಯರು, ನಮ್ಮ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಕೃತಿಗಳ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ತುಂಬ ಜಾಗ್ರತೆ ವಹಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Kannada proverb – Kumbaarange varsha, donnege nimisha (An year for a potter, a minute for a stick).
Earthen pots which were widely used for cooking and other utilities in villages took a lot of effort to make. The potter had to search for the right mud, bring it, put water and temper it, then carefully make pot in his wheel, dry the pot in sunlight and then temper with heat again. Then he had to store these fragile pots carefully till the customers came to buy them. The time and effort to make a pot are really huge. But in contrast it takes only a minute for a stick to break the pot! You hit the pot just once with a stick and lo! It is broke!! Similarly it takes years and years of sustained effort to build a reputation, a relationship, a legacy. But, it takes just one moment to ruin it!  One wrong word or a wrong move can spoil things which are very precious in our lives. So we need to be very careful in our words and actions. This proverb does teach an important life lesson.
