`ಬೆಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣ್ಣು ಹೊತ್ತಂಗೆ’

ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳವಾಗಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗುವ ಗಾದೆಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೂ ಒಂದು. ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸವು ಯಾವುದೇ ಫಲ ನೀಡದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಜನರು ಈ ಗಾದೆಮಾತನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ವರ್ಷವಿಡೀ ಓದಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಅನುತ್ತೀರ್ಣನಾದಾಗ, ಅಥವಾ ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟರೂ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಲಾಗದಿದ್ದಾಗ `ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ಇಷ್ಟು ವರ್ಷ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಬೆಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣ್ಣು ಹೊತ್ತ ಹಾಗಾಯಿತು ನೋಡಿ’’ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಜ ಬೆಟ್ಟವು ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾಗಿರುವುದೇ ಮಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಮಣ್ಣು ಹೊರುವುದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕವಾದ ಕೆಲಸವು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುವ ಹತಾಶ ಭಾವವನ್ನು ತುಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರಕವಾಗಿ ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತಿದು.

Kannada proverb – Bettakke mannu hoththange(They carried the soil to the hill).

This is a proverb which is much used amongst Kannada speakers. When someone feels that his huge effort goes useless or in vain this proverb is uttered. For example, when the students do not fare well in the examination, the teacher might feel that his/her teaching went futile, and he/she may utter this proverb. A hill is naturally made up of soil. Therefore carrying soil to a hill is futile. This way, the proverb picturesquely depicts the sinking feeling when we put futile effort on some difficult task.
