ಕನ್ನಡ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು – ಎಂಜಲು ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಕಾಗೇನೂ ಅಟ್ಟೋನಲ್ಲ. 

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಬಹು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾದ ಹಾಗೂ ತುಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರಕಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತು ಇದು. ನಮ್ಮ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ಜಿಪುಣರನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಹೇಳಿರುವ ಮಾತು.‌ ಎಂಜಲು ಕೈ ಅಂದರೆ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ತೊಳೆಯದ ಕೈ‌. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅನ್ನದ ಒಂದೆರಡು ಅಗುಳುಗಳು ಅಂಟಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಿಂದ ಕಾಗೆಯನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಆ ಅಗುಳುಗಳು ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ಜಿಪುಣನಿಗೆ ನಷ್ಟ ಆಗುತ್ತದಲ್ಲವೆ!? ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಅವನು ಎಂಜಲು ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಗೆಯನ್ನು ಅಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (ಓಡಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ)! ಜಿಪುಣರನ್ನು ಲಘುವಾಗಿ ತಮಾಷೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತು ಇದು. 

Kannada proverb : Enjalu kaiyalli kaagenuu attonalla( He does not even chase crows with his unwashed hand( after meals)). 

This proverb is a very picturesque, famous proverb which playfully mocks the stingy ones among us. Usually south Indians including Kannadigas eat their food using their right hand. After they eat, there might be one or two grains of rice or pulses which are sticking to their hand. A stingy man won’t even chase away a crow with that unwashed hand because, the grains which are sticking to it may fall off, and crow or some insects may eat them. Therefore he will be at loss you see! You might get a smile when you read this. Though the instance in the proverb is a kind of exaggeration and the style is playful, there is a grain of truth in it about stingy persons. Isn’t it?
