ಕನ್ನಡ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು – ಊರು ಕೊಳ್ಳೆ ಹೊಡೆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೋಟೆ ಬಾಗಿಲು ಹಾಕಿದರಂತೆ. 

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಗಾದೆಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಇದು. ಊರನ್ನು ಪರರ ದಾಳಿಯಿಂದ ಕಾಪಾಡುವಂಥದ್ದು ಕೋಟೆ. ದಾಳಿಕೋರರು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸದಂತೆ ಕೋಟೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲನ್ನು ಭದ್ರ ಪಡಿಸುವುದು ರಾಜನು ನೇಮಿಸಿದ ಕಾವಲುಗಾರನ ಕೆಲಸ. ಆದರೆ ಕೋಟೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯದಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದಿಟ್ಟು ದಾಳಿಕೋರರು ಬರಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಅವರು ದಾಳಿ ಮಾಡಿ‌ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಲೂಟಿ ಹೊಡೆದು ಹೋದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೋಟೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ? ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು, ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದ ಜಾಗ್ರತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅವು ಸಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗಿರುವಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸ, ಜಾಗ್ರತೆಗಳು ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಜೀವನ ವಿವೇಕವೊಂದನ್ನು ಈ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತು ತುಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. 

Kannada proverb – ooru kolle hodeda mele kote baagilu haakidranthe ( They closed the entrance of the fort after the village was looted) 

Any action we do has its place and time. There is no use if we do anything after the time lapse. This proverb stresses this point with a clear example. There is no use if the entrance of the fort is closed after the village inside it is looted by hooligans. If at all the entrance has to be closed, it has to be done before the hooligans come. We learn the importance of timely action by the help of this proverb. No doubt this is a proverb often used in the conversation amongst Kannadigas.
