ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಅಗೆದು ಇಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದಂಗೆ

ಕೆಲವು ಸಲ ನಾವು ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ತುಂಬ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮ ಹಾಕಿದರೂ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲವು ನಾವು ಎಣಿಸಿದಷ್ಟು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಟ್ಟ ತುಂಬ ದೊಡ್ಡದು, ಅದನ್ನು ಅಗೆಯುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾದ ಮಾತಲ್ಲ. ಕೆಲವರು ಸಂಪತ್ತು, ನಿಧಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಆಸೆಯಿಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಅಗೆಯುವುದುಂಟು. ಆದರೆ ಹಾಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿರುವ ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಅಗೆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು ಒಂದು ಇಲಿ ಎಂದಾಗ ಅಗೆದವರಿಗೆ `ನಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರಮ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಯಿತಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಬರುವುದು ಸಹಜ. ಆದರೆ ಜಿವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗಾಗುವುದು ಅಪರೂಪವೇನಲ್ಲ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈ ಹಾಕುವಾಗ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಕೈಹಾಕಬೇಕು ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಮತ್ತು ಇಲಿಯ ಪರಿಚಿತ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿನ ಒಂದು `ಕಾರ್ಯ-ಪ್ರತಿಫಲ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವನ್ನು ಈ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದೆ. ಚಿತ್ರ ಬರೆದಷ್ಟು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆಯ ಮಾತಿದು.

 Sometimes in life huge efforts by human beings are not rewarded proportionately. One might toil day and night but may get pittance as a reward. This can be compared to digging the mountain expecting to get a huge treasure but getting nothing more than a rat! The above Kannada proverb metaphorically and picturesquely depicts this situation. So care should be taken when we start a new venture so that our efforts will not go waste. Alternatively if we have to face the situation of very small reward for very big effort, this proverb consoles us that other people too have faced such a situation in life sometimes.
