ಬರ್ತಾ ಬರ್ತಾ ರಾಯರ ಕುದುರೆ ಕತ್ತೆಯಾಯ್ತು.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತಿದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಶಾಲಾ ತರಗತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಓದಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅಂಕ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಬರುಬರುತ್ತಾ ಓದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಅಂಕ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕರು `ಏನಿದು? ಏನಾಯ್ತು ನಿಂಗೆ?  ಬರ್ತಾ ಬರ್ತಾ ರಾಯರ ಕುದುರೆ ಕತ್ತೆ ಆಯ್ತು ಅಂದ ಹಾಗೆ ಆಯ್ತು ನೋಡು’ ಎಂದು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯನ್ನು ಗದರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನ ವಿಧಾನದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕುದುರೆ ಅನ್ನುವುದು ಕತ್ತೆಗಿಂತ ಉತ್ತಮ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಇದೆ. ಕುದುರೆಯ ಎತ್ತರ, ಅಂದ ಚಂದ, ಠೀವಿ, ಅದು ಓಡುವ ವೇಗ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಕತ್ತೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೋ ಏನೋ ಈ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಂತೂ ಜನಮಾನಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ. ಭಾರತ ದೇಶದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದ ರಾಜರು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಕುದುರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾಕುವುದು, ಅವುಗಳ ಸವಾರಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು – ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಪಾಪ ಕತ್ತೆ! ಅದರ ಬದುಕು ಅಗಸನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಹೊರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನಗಳು ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಢಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು ಜನಜನಿತವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು.

Kannada proverb: Bartha bartha rayara kudure kaththe Aaythu(As the time passed King’s horse turned into a donkey).

This is a proverb in Kannada which is widely used in schools, particularly in the context of students. If a student who used to be a good scorer in the beginning, if gradually scores less and less this proverb is used to make him/her aware of the decline in his/her performance.
If we look into the history of our country and our state we may see that Kings had a fetish for good-quality horses. Either for their warfare, travel or joyride they preferred good quality horses. They would import quality horses from Arabia and such places. Therefore, when compared to horses, donkeys are looked down upon.  

When we look at the proverb in the above context, we can understand its meaning a better way. This is a widely used proverb.
