ಕನ್ನಡ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು   –   ಗುಲಗಂಜಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಕಪ್ಪು ಕಾಣಲ್ಲ.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಗಾದೆಮಾತು ಇದು. ಗುಲಗಂಜಿ ಬೀಜ ನೋಡಲು ತುಂಬ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ‌. ಅದು ಭಾಗಶಃ ಕೆಂಪು ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಗಶಃ ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಗುಲಗಂಜಿಗೆ  ತನ್ನ ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಣ್ಣ ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಜನಜನಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ದೋಷ ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾದ ಗಮನಿಕೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಬೇರೆಯವರು ತಮ್ಮ ದೋಷದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಸಿಟ್ಟು ಬರುತ್ತದೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು ಆ ದೋಷವನ್ನು  ತಿದ್ದಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಲೋಕಾರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಮನುಷ್ಯರಲ್ಲಿ‌  ಇಂತಹ‌ ಅಂದರೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತಪ್ಪು ಕಾಣದ ವರ್ತನೆ ‘ಕಂಡಾಗ’,  ಈ ‘ಗುಲಗಂಜಿ’ ಗಾದೆಮಾತನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ‌ 

Kannada proverb – Gulaganjige thanna kappu kaanalla( Rosary bead can not see its black part).

Rosary bead which is called GULAGANJI in Kannada is a pretty looking, shiny seed which has both red and black coloured parts on its skin. Because of the combination of bright red and black colours the seed looks very attractive.  Due to its durability, it is used in making jewelry and artifacts. 

Very curiously, the above proverb in Kannada  says that Gulaganji can not see its black part! Actually here our ancestors have drawn our attention to a particular human nature, in which a human being can not see his own mistake. If someone points out the mistake he/she gets angry. It is a general observation about human beings. Our ancestors have done well in using rosary bead as a metaphor to decipher a human attribute. Very intelligent of them! Isn’t it?
